Music & Traditions
Looking back on my life, my family has made significant use of music on various occasions, such as weddings and funerals. One thing that stood out to me the most would probably be the different song choices for funerals. Traditionally, funerals are a time of sorrow and grief; however, despite that fact, my family has been able to make beautiful, heartwarming moments that we can look back on and include in the family member's memory and honor.
One thing in my life that I am so thankful for is that I was able to meet all 4 of my great-grandmothers. I was able to make memories with all of them before they passed. One funeral that I remember was one of my great-grandmothers on my dad's side of the family. Although we did have a service for her, my dad's side of the family prefers to call them "Celebrations of life." For her, we went to the beach to scatter her ashes in the waves. I remember there was a beautiful sunset, the ocean breeze was calm, and the waves were gentle. The most memorable part about it was the music. During the time we were spreading her ashes, my uncle was playing Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. I remember it being so beautiful and really bringing the whole atmosphere together. Everyone was filled with sadness, but we still felt unity and peace during that time.
Hey Reece, I really enjoyed listening to the bagpipe recording of Amazing Grace. It's so beautiful! I'm sorry for your losses and I bet your Great-Uncle is watching every one of USC's games from where he's watching over you!
ReplyDeleteHey Reece, I enjoyed reading what you had to say. Right off the bat I think it’s really cool how sports and something like the USC chant made its way into your life and was used as a way to honor your Great Uncle Jimmy :) I also love the song Amazing Grace and the bagpipe version sounds great! Very cool take on the traditional song. It’s especially cool that your uncle played it for you guys. I like the idea of celebrating life rather than being filled with sadness! Thank you for sharing with us.

ReplyDeleteHi Reece ! I really enjoyed reading your blog and especially understand the traditions in your family. The fact that for each funerals, you and your family made it special and for the person is really touching !
ReplyDeleteHi Reece! I really love how you relate the USC chant into your life. Watching the USC games with you are always super fun and knowing the deeper meaning now is so special! I'm sorry for your losses but I'm glad you have great memories to look back on :)
ReplyDeleteHiya, Reece. I think it's wonderful that you got to experience your family in such a way that you can look back at events like these and cherish it. I had a somewhat similar experience of getting to witness the spreading of my grandfather's ashes at sea, where he wished to be and is now resting at. I may have not been there personally due to unfortunate timing as this was some odd years ago during the pandemic and nearly across the U.S. (If I remember this correctly), but I remember how special it was to watch. The music was something I'd been familiar with prior too, as I'd used to live nearby an active military cemetery, but it felt so surreal to hear it in regard to my own family. Best wishes to our people in a better place.
